A centre of excellence in fly fishing tuition, the Arundell offers a number of fishing courses throughout the year. These courses cater for all levels of ability and interest, from the absolute beginner through to the fisherman seeking to learn more advanced techniques and skills . The fishing department has 3 professional fly-fishing instructors, with access to a number of further expert local guides.

4 days beginners course

(From age 12 upwards)

The four day course runs through a series of lectures in our fishing classroom and practical lessons on both the lake and river that takes the student through rod and line handling, basics of fly selection, and understanding the behaviours of the quarry to a point where the student will be able to present a fly on stillwater and river in a manner that will maximise his chances of catching a trout. The four day course covers each aspect of fly fishing to a depth that will allow the student to identify the basic patterns in matching the hatch, to key aspects of rivercraft, fish behaviour and fly presentation such that following the course the angler will feel confident of fishing on their own. The four day course includes two full days on the river.

2 days beginners course

Fly tying courses

(From age 12 upwards)

This is a one days course teaching the craft of fly tying, and covers the key fly patters that will enable the angler to tie his own flies for a days fishing. The course also focusses on basic entomology in matching the hatch, and understanding key "triggers" in fly dressing and presenting the fly.

Unless booked separately with us these are group courses which typically run through the off-season.

The fly tying course concentrates on a look at the main categories of insect life comprising the trout's diet and how best to emulate these insects at their various stages. The student will finish the course equipped with the skills to dress a nymph, emerger, upwinged and spent fly, which covers the 4 stages of the life cycle of a fly.

Students will be supplied with all the equipment, but equipment will also be on sale after or during the course.

Cooking

(From age 12 upwards)

The cooking course will focus on cleaning and preparing a trout, and styles of cooking from baking to pan-frying to grilling the fish, using recipes from the Arundell chefs.
