We think these are great spots to enjoy a picnic and appreciate the beautiful countryside. Picnic hampers can be arranged by request by The Arundell Deli,
1) Warbstow Burrow:
An Iron Age hillfort about 0.5 miles west of the village of Warbstow just a short drive from the hotel. The site is 250m above sea level, on a hill at the heads of two tributaries of the River Ottery. With views to Lundy Island and Dartmoor.
2) Crackington Haven
A lovely shingle cove dominated by majestic cliffs and offering a stretch of golden sand, the perfect place for wild swimming when the tide is in. A great location to enjoy the rhythm of the sea with a picnic after a wild swim.
A family-friendly place where you can enjoy the tranquillity of a picnic by the East Dart River, or take an exhilarating walk to see the stunning views from Bellever Tor. You will discover numerous archaeological sites as you explore Bellever and see a variety of wildlife, including the Dartmoor Ponies which have been brought here by the Dartmoor Pony Heritage Trust to graze the land. There is also an Activity Sheet to download, to become a Medieval History Hunter.
A picturesque picnic spot amongst one of the most impressive rock outcrops in Dartmoor. With St Michael’s Church at its top, it makes a distinctive and famous silhouette on the Dartmoor skyline. The tor is unusual as it is one of the few on Dartmoor not to be made of granite. In fact, it is formed from basaltic lava which flowed some 350 million years ago into a shallow sea that covered the area during the Lower Carboniferous and Devonian periods.
Have fun with the family on this cycle ride which follows the route of an old Great Westen Railway track. From the edge of Plymouth, you plunge straight into glorious oak woodland before emerging out into open countryside. The trail leads you past dramatic industrial remains, including towering quarry faces, and across breathtaking viaducts. You’ll get the chance for close-up views of nesting wild peregrines (in season) and a taste of invigorating moorland fresh air all year round.
